Ken & Kathleen Hit the Open Road

Kathleen and I will be taking a Major Road Trip every year. We'll share our adventures in this section of the web site — the miles, the landmarks, the detours, and the memories.

2003

The Mega Road Trip — 7,373 Miles

We decided to do a "mega" Road Trip and left the Tuesday after Super Bowl Sunday. We wanted to head south to Texas for some warmer weather first, then over to the Grand Canyon, and eventually out to San Diego to position us for a drive up the California Coast to San Francisco. Well, we did it — 7,373 miles and 532 photographs.

Texas

Headed south first for warmer weather before turning west.

Grand Canyon

Stayed at the El Tovar — a first-class hotel on the rim, built of native boulders and Oregon Pine, opened January 14, 1905. Named for Spanish explorer Pedro de Tovar.

San Diego

Reached the Pacific Coast and turned north for the drive up the California coastline.

San Francisco

The final destination — the Golden Gate, the bay, and a well-earned rest after 7,373 miles.

2002

South to Key West, North to New York City

The year before the mega trip, Kathleen and I headed south then over to Key West before turning north to New York City. We made it to the most Southern Point in the USA — the famous Key West marker — for a photo that will always be a favorite.

Key West

The southernmost point in the continental USA. A must-stop on any road trip heading south.

New York City

Turned north from Florida and finished the trip in the city that never sleeps.

Check back for updates as Ken and Kathleen plan their next Major Road Trip. There are a lot of miles left to cover.
