Mack-Boring Hands-On Diesel Course — Yanmar Marine Diesel
If you own a boat with a diesel engine on it, you know the meaning of reliability and simplicity. But like any piece of equipment, a diesel does require some care and maintenance. What is the best way to learn how to do your own maintenance? I found that taking a hands-on course was an excellent vehicle for learning.
Course Details

- Mack-Boring
- Instructor
- Larry Berlin
- Duration
- Three days
- Class Size
- Limited to ten amateur mechanics
- Engine
- Yanmar marine diesel (3JH2E — same model as the one in Ken's sailboat)
The instructor, Larry Berlin, was excellent and I would recommend his course to anyone who wants to get started in handling their own routine maintenance. The engine my partner and I worked on was the same model as the one in my sailboat. Can't do much better than that!
What We Covered
Starter & Oil Cooler
Hands-on removal, inspection, and reinstallation of the 3JH2E starter and oil cooler components.
Thermostat Service
Learning the right way — and the wrong way — to service the thermostat. Larry shows us how it is done.
Cylinder Head Re-Torque
14 cylinder head bolts, properly torqued in sequence. Keeping things organized is half the battle.
Starting Her Up
After three days of work, the moment of truth: time to start her up. A $1,000 job done yourself.
Below you will find a few pics I took over the three days of learning. If you have a diesel on your boat, I highly recommend this course.
